Paper offers the most varied and attractive surface.

It cannot be treated lightly since it will react in its own integral way inspiring a direct response to graphite or charcoal, to watercolour or gouache. I have always found great pleasure in drawing. I do not use it as a preparatory stage to painting rather as an autonomous media with its own strength. Recently I use pastel and explore its unique quality over various papers.

Part of my training at the Academie Julian-Paris, consisted in the use of charcoal to copy plaster casts of various classical sculptures over a period of three weeks. A deep relationship between what the eye sees and the transfer of this vision onto white paper taught me the basis for whatever I was to attempt later. Such discipline facilitates eventual freedom. Natural poetry can be found in drawing.

My use of black:
Black did not mean death in the underworld. It was the colour of fertility, the colour of damp caves and rich soil, of the womb of the goddess where life begins.
